Leave central Barcelona and travel west by luxury, air-conditioned coach to the Catalan town of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, roughly 28 miles (45km) away. The small town’s claim to fame is the famous Freixenet Winery, where some of Spain’s best bubbly – known as cava – is produced.
Head inside the esteemed wine estate and learn about cava while hearing little-known details about the family-run Freixenet brand. Established in the early 20th century, Freixenet was originally run by a husband-and-wife team who made sparkling wine. Their son started to export the wine, and its popularity grew until cava was awarded the prestigious DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) classification – a mark of quality.
Watch an audio-visual presentation about cava production in the area on your wine tour, and visit the estate’s original cellar, built in 1922. As you walk, hear of the different grape varieties that are used and of the fermentation stages that convert the wine’s natural sugars into carbon dioxide – a stage that gives the wine its characteristic fizz.
Hop aboard a mini train and ride through the modern part of the wine cellar, seeing an exhibit that documents how cava production has changed over the years. Your tour of the cellars then ends on a high note, with a glass of chilled Freixenet cava.
Return to your coach and travel with your guide to the stylish seaside town of Sitges – Spain’s chic coastal resort. Pristine beaches, vibrant culture and a reported 300 days of sunshine each year, Sitges has long been a popular place with the Catalans. Enjoy a walking tour of the village, admiring sights like the Church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla – Sitge’s beachside place of worship – and then enjoy roughly 1.5 hours of free time to explore the town on your own.
Meet your guide at the pre-arranged time, and travel back to central Barcelona where your tour finishes.
